What I personally do is carry a rechargeable hotspot (most often just in the form of a Walmart phone), then if I park up somewhere with only one bar of signal on the ground, I'll send some Paracord over a branch, then hoist it up to rain wifi down on my camp, and couple that with another device and Google Voice for phone/SMS. But you can easily get triple the height with a diy PVC solution there.

There are fiberglass poles you could use for this, but the wire can't exactly stretch with the pole, so you'll have to coil/uncoil it each time, and probably want to unmount the antenna itself as well. Where exactly will depend on your van, but you'll want to tie it to the rack near the back so it can hinge, then be able to either tie down the antenna end at the front for travel, or untie that then swing the rear overhang down to another tie-down (like an external door hinge, standalone bracket, maybe the bumper), which will give you 4-8' over the roof, or 10-20' of antenna height over the ground in a pretty simple procedure - untie, tie, plug-in.Ī bit more productive yet involved version would be a permanently affixed mast tube (vertical, again like on a rear corner or door hinge), that extends up. If you want simple, take a 10' stick of PVC, mount your antenna to it, and lay it forward on your roof. I've set up a few different types of mobile mast.
